Hyzer vs anhyzer are the only two angles a disc can have. They refer to the angle at which your disc releases. If you learn and master the release angle, you will finish a hole faster in time. Maximum distance will be easy to achieve too.
Flight patterns of a disc:
It’s essential to know some acronyms you would come across that describes a disc’s flight pattern in disc golf.
- RHBH: Right Hand Back Hand throw
- LHBH: Left Hand Back Hand throw
- RHFH: Right Hand Fore Hand throw
- LHFH: Left Hand Fore Hand throw

Hyzer vs Anhyzer throw:
●Anhyzer throw:
When your disc’s top faces toward you, not away, this is an anhyzer. The disc is released at an angle that changes its flight path. For an RHBH golfer, anhyzer throw will make the disc turn right. It curves precisely the way as that of which it was thrown.
●Hyzer throw:
It happens if the upper side of your disc faces far away from you. It is also a shot that curves in the opposite way of the direction it was thrown. For an RHBH golfer, the disc travels toward the left.
The release angle is just the difference between a hyzer throw and an anhyzer throw.
NOTE: You can throw a disc straight, but that wouldn’t count as an angle.
Overstable vs. Understable disc:
There are two types of discs based on stability. When you release a disc, it will fly according to its strength.
●Overstable disc:
Discs with Overstability need throws very hard with high speed. It means that you need to put so much power in your shot and have the excellent arm strength. As such, they are not suitable for beginners. For an RHBH thrower, the disc will first spin right, then turn and fade towards left.
●Understable disc:
Understable discs are perfect for beginners. They don’t need as much speed and are easier to control. With an RHBH thrower, they turn over more towards the right and then fade at the left.
The direction of the wind might also affect the type of disc you select. If the wind is blowing in the direction of your disc or coming in from behind, such disc will be more suitable. However, if the wind will be coming towards you and against the direction of your disc you’re throwing, something more overstable will be better. You can try practicing with both discs to understand better what they do.
Why disc golfers might make use of hyzer or anhyzer throw:
To avoid entering into the zones that are off-limits or water on the hole.
To move around any obstacles in your way.
For courses with sharp angles
NOTE: Make sure you’re throwing with appropriate discs for your skill level and for whatever throw you’re trying to complete.
Disc golf throw Types :
disc golf throws may be of different types using hyzer and the anhyzer concepts
●S-shot (S curve):
The S shot is thrown with an understable disc towards the left of the target. Any disc’s understability will make its first turn right, but it will end at the left.
●Hyzer flip:
An understable disc is in use for this throw and any hyzer release. It’s quite similar to S-shot but is much straighter. Hyzer release will make the disc move left when thrown but will eventually move right because it is understable before finally ending back at the left.
●Flex shot:
Here, the disc with overstability is in use with the anhyzer release. The disc is thrown left of the target, and it will turn right before coming back to left to finish. It is the hardest but commonly used by pros.
How to perform hyzer vs anhyzer throws:
● Hold the golf disc with the top facing away from you (hyzer) and facing you (anhyzer).
● Adjust your wrist accordingly to your desired angle. For beginners, holding the disc at 45 degrees is best.
● Then, release your disc.
Conclusion:
You should note that the disc’s stability and the angle you let the disc release will ultimately affect how you will play the game because they would affect your disc’s flight. So, always put them into consideration when playing. We hope that you have gotten a good understanding of the Hyzer vs Anhyzer difference. Learning and understanding these two ways of throwing will significantly improve your disc golf game, and you can start learning other shots.
